Ahead of the federal elections on 23rd February 2025, the German government has announced a six-month period of extension of border controls in order to reduce irregular immigration. An extended deadline of 15 September has been announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Mr Sholz, the leader of the outgoing German government, said border controls had enabled Germany to reduce illegal immigration. In September 2024, these measures had already been implemented, when almost 47,000 people had been turned back at the border, asylum applications had fallen by a third and 1,900 suspected smugglers had been arrested. The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad is organising a collective exhibition entitled “Feminine Art and Migration” in Rabat from February 13 to March 12, at the Espace Rivages in the Foundation’s offices. The vernissage, which will take place on Thursday 13 February, brings together artworks from three self-taught Moroccan artists, according to a press release from the Foundation. Mr Driss El Yazami, President of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), attended a ceremony in the city of Agadir , on Saturday 8 February 2025, in tribute to Mr Arsala Idder, former President of the Association of Moroccans in France (AMF). The ceremony was organised by the activist’s family and friends to commemorate his 94th birthday. Mr Idder was a prominent anti-colonial activist in 1956, and a member of the Moroccan left-wing trade union movement after the country gained independence. The Florence Police Headquarters has announced, in multiple languages, an exceptional opening of the immigration office this Saturday for the issuance of residence permits, including for those without a prior appointment. This measure aims to address the increasing number of requests. Beneficiaries will be able to collect their entry numbers between 8:00 and 9:30 AM. Anasse Bari, a Moroccan professor and artificial intelligence researcher, has been honoured, wednesday 5th february , the 2025 by New York University (NYU) in recognition of his commitment to education and research. He has been awarded the Martin Luther King Faculty Award for 2025, The university website states that this award recognises professors who, in their work and research, demonstrate leadership and commitment to the values of justice and equity advocated by the American civil rights activist. In its latest monthly report on foreign trade indicators, published on 1st February 2025, the Foreign Exchange Office reports that remittances from Moroccans living abroad reached more than MAD 117.7 billion in 2025, up from MAD 115.26 billion in 2023. According to the Bureau, the remittances recorded an increase of 2.1% (plus 2.45 billion dirhams) as compared to the end of December 2023. A report recently published by the World Bank on migration and development ranks Morocco just behind Egypt.
