Prague – The number of the Czech Republic´s inhabitants is again rising, having reached 10,538,300 in 2014, which was 25,900 more than in 2013 and the highest increase since 2010, the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) said today.
The increase was mainly due to the number of immigrants, which was the highest in six years. Besides, more people were born than died.
More people entered into marriage last year compared with 2013 and there were fewer divorces.
The total of 109,900 newly born children last year was the highest in four years and it exceeded the 2013 number by 3100.
The number of 105,700 deaths was the lowest in six years.
The CSU said this is also due to a low number of deaths in the first months of last year that did not see any extensive epidemics of respiratory diseases.
“However, the process of population ageing continued. The average age rose by 0.2 percent to 41.7 years and the number of seniors older than 65 rose to 17.8 percent of the population,” the CSU said.
Migration raised the number of inhabitants by 21,700 people. Some 41,600 people moved in from other countries. Some 20,000 left the country, which was about one third less than in 2013. Ukrainians dominated in both directions, the CSU said.
