US: Protesters turn out against proposed immigration law

Monday, 16 March 2015

SAN ANTONIO - Protesters gather in downtown San Antonio Sunday in opposition of a bill filed in the Texas Senate that takes aim at so-called "sanctuary" cities.

The bill proposed by Sen. Charles Perry of Lubbock would prohibit cities from adopting policies that would not allow local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, including asking the immigration status of a person detained by officers.

"It doesn't take a million voices, just those that understand this bill well enough to explain it to the public and to make sure everyone makes up their minds for themselves," said Gabriel Velasquez with Inner City Advocates.

The bill will be heard Monday by the Veterans Affairs and Military Installations Senate subcommittee.

Protesters will travel to Austin Monday for demonstrations at the Capitol.
