Sokoto — A total of 631 foreigners who were illegally residing in the country were repatriated by the Sokoto State command of the Nigeria Immigration Service last year.
The NIS Comptroller, Mr Yunusa Aliyu, while speaking on the command’s activities in 2014, said the affected people were mostly from Niger Republic.
According to him, they were deported mostly for lack of valid travel documents in line with the ECOWAS Protocol.
He added that 501 Nigeriens were refused entry into Nigeria last year due to lack of valid travel documents, suspicion of criminality and poor economic status. As part of efforts to secure the nation’s borders, the comptroller said 105 officers and men of the service were trained under the border patrol guards and deployed to the state.
He added that the men were redeployed to three newly-established border patrol posts in Gada, Tangaza and Sabon-Birni local government areas of Sokoto.
He said the command holds security meetings with security personnel in the neighbouring Niger Republic.
