New episode of the debate on the repeal of social security treaty between Morocco and the Netherlands

Wednesday, 05 November 2014

The decision of the Dutch government about a possible repeal of social security treaty between Morocco and the Netherlands continues to fuel the Dutch political debate.

The Committee on Social Affairs and Labour in Dutch parliament will proceed from this Tuesday, October 4, 2014 to consider the draft law proposed by the Minister of Social Affairs, which states that the social security treaty should be revoked, after the negotiations on the subject with the Moroccan side have failed.

This unilateral decision by the Dutch government has also affected the cultural cooperation between the two countries. The Dutch newspaper "Het Parool" published an article this week concluding that, according to the spokesman of the "Tropenmuseum" (Ethnography Museum in Amsterdam), the financing of an exhibition on Morocco in Dutch schools which amounts to one million Euros over three years was suspended.

The Dutch newspaper said that the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), the institution responsible for the production of this project, informed that preparations are suspended until further notice. The newspaper concluded that this decision may be related to the failure of the treaty negotiations of social security.

On the other hand, the CCME website received electronic documents transmitted by the Social Affairs Department of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Morocco, in which it explains the consequences of the abrogation of the treaty on social security retirees and their families, whether residing in the Netherlands or Morocco.
