New York ( Map)– The Moroccan judge Mohamed Bennouna was re-elected on November 6 in New York to a nine-year term on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) starting on 6 February 2015, after simultaneous rounds of voting in the UN General Assembly and Security Council.
In the General Assembly, Bennouna had 159 votes (the highest score) exceeding the 97 votes required, while in the Security Council, he won 14 out of 15 votes of the Council's member states.
Former Moroccan diplomat and jurist, Bennouna worked as a professor at the Mohammed V University and as a permanent representative of Morocco at the United Nations (2001-2006).
An International Law PhD and a professor of International Law, Bennouna is a Hague Academy of International Law graduate and a member of the International Law Institute.
The Moroccan jurist notably served as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Since 2006, Bennouna has been a judge of the International Court of Justice.
