More than 5,700 Moroccan nationals leave Libya via the Ras Ajdir border crossing

Wednesday, 11 March 2015

Voluntary evacuation of Moroccan nationals fleeing the violence in Libya continues with the support of the monitoring unit set up by the Moroccan authorities and was able to evacuate a total of 5730 Moroccans until March, 5th.

According to data collected by the MAP in the Tunisian border crossing of Ras Ajdir, known to be the main crossing between Tunisia and Libya, the monitoring unit delivered 950 passes to Moroccan citizens who do not have passports and to the children of Moroccan nationals married to Libyans and are registered on the Moroccan civil status.

The cell also issued 740 "acts of engagement" for the benefit of Moroccan citizens blocked at this border crossing to allow them to pass and continue their journey to the Tunisian Carthage airport and then to Casablanca.

Logistical difficulties, the complicated procedure and the specific security conditions did not deter the elements of the monitoring unit to continue the evacuation of the members of the Moroccan community through a site lacking the minimum infrastructure work amid security threats on the borders between the two countries.

For voluntary evacuation operation especially from Benghazi, plagued for months to violent clashes between militias and Libyan army supported by General Khalifa Haftar, the cell indicated that a recording operation for persons wishing to voluntarily leave Libya was organized in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the ministry in charge of Moroccans living abroad and migrations affairs.

An agreement was also signed with a travel agency in Benghazi for the transportation of Moroccan nationals from Tobruk airport (was) to that of Carthage, and then to the Casablanca International Airport.

Despite progress in this operation, constraints and challenges remain hampering the efforts of the members of the monitoring unit especially with the deterioration of the security situation in Libya with the possibility of a massive influx of Moroccans to passage.

The cell members are often forced to cross the Libyan border to provide assistance to members of the Moroccan community with the support of border crossing authorities as well as the Tunisian side of Libya.

However, the choice focused on Carthage airport, 700 km away from Ras Ajdir, as a starting point to Morocco poses difficulties, knowing that the city of Djerba just 150 km from the border crossing has an International airport used by many countries for the same reason.

Another difficulty encountered by the evacuation operation is that of children of Moroccan nationals married to foreigners and non-registered in the civil state register because of the closure, for some time, of Morocco’s consulates in Tripoli and Benghazi.
