The Netherlands: Moroccans most affected by unemployment

Thursday, 26 March 2015

The Dutch newspaper "De Volkskrant" published an article on the unemployment in respect to nationalities in the Netherlands. Citing figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), "De Volkskrant" indicates that it is the Moroccan immigrants who are most affected.

Among Moroccan immigrants, 19.6% are unemployed, against 5.7% for the native population. Moroccans are well on top of the list, they’re followed by Caribbean immigrants (19.3%), Turks (15.3%) and Surinamese (13.9%).

More than half of non-EU foreigners in the Netherlands are unemployed. According to OECD figures, only 49.5% of immigrants have access to employment. This figure rises to 77.1% among native Dutch.

Since the 2008 crisis, unemployment among Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands has increased significantly outperforming all other non-EU foreigners in the European Union.

According to Monique Kremer, a sociologist contacted by De Volkskrant, the unemployment rate is high among non-European immigrants mainly because they often have more flexible contracts. "After the crisis of 2008, when the economy collapsed, Moroccans and Turks were the first to be laid off," says the sociologist.
