13 Muslims MPs enter the British House of Commons

Tuesday, 12 May 2015

The legislative elections of May 7 allowed 13 Muslims including 8 women MPs to enter the British House of Commons, more than in 2010 where only 8 MPs were Muslim.

Six elected Muslim women are part of the Labour Party one among the Conservatives (Tories) and the Scottish National Party (SNP). While the votes of Labour dispersed, they have not prevented four Muslim candidates from having access to the seats for the first time in the ranks of the opposition party.

In total, the Labour party counts in their ranks nine Muslim MPs, three Tories and one SNP.

The new members are Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh (SNP); Rupa Huq (Labour); Tulip Siddiq (Labour); Nusrat Ghani (Conservative); Naz Shah (Labour); Imran Hussain (Labour).

Those re-elected are Khalid Mahmood (Labour); Shabana Mahmood (Labour); Rushanara Ali (Labour); Yasmin Qureshi (Labour); Sadiq Khan (Labour); Sajid Javid (Conservative); Rehman Chishti (Conservative).

The results of the British election in 2015 have taken everyone by surprise as they turned out different from what the prognoses and polls have suggested, Hence, the conservative party of Prime Minister David Cameron won an absolute majority with 331 seats.
