A young Dutch of Moroccan origin elected head of the Green party in the Netherlands

Friday, 15 May 2015

Jesse Klaver has succeeded to Bram van Ojik (60) as the head of the Green Party (GroenLinks). He has pulled off the impressive feat of being the youngest political leader ever elected in the Batavian kingdom.

Jesse Klaver was born on May 1, 1986 in Roosendaal, south of the Netherlands to a Moroccan father and an Indonesian mother. Jesse who grew up far from his father in social housing in the area of Westrand, made professional studies before being elected in 2010. In 2014, he distinguished himself particularly by inviting the economist Thomas Piketty in parliament.

By choosing Jesse Klaver, the Left Party wishes to initiate a new phase in which it will attempt to recover some of its electorate rounded up in recent years by parties of the left and right.

The Dutch Green Party (opposition) had suffered a great defeat in the parliamentary elections of 12 September 2012. It got only 2.3% of the votes and 4 out of 150 seats in the National Assembly while he had obtained 6.6% of votes and 10 seats in the 2010 elections.
