Morocco-Netherlands: Negotiations on the social security agreement fail

Tuesday, 01 September 2015

Morocco and the Netherlands have failed to reach an agreement on the social security agreement between the two countries as reported the Dutch media.

Signed in 1972, the agreement provides for the payment of social allowances to Moroccans or their families if they live in Morocco. Only in recent years, a majority of Dutch MPs supported the reduction of payments to MRE who went back to their country of origin.

They argue that these allocations should reflect the needs of people where they are rather than being spread on Dutch standards.

Early 2013, Dutch Parliament passed a law reducing 40% allowances of such persons. The case was subsequently invited to the council of ministers and a Dutch MP went so far as to file a motion to request the removal of the entire agreement.
