The IOM Council: Morocco Designated to Represent Africa

Friday, 30 October 2015

The African Group unanimously designated On Thursday 29th October, 2015, Morocco to represent Africa in the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as of November 2015.

The African choice of Morocco as a board member of the organization comes to reinforce the continued and renewed commitment of the Kingdom in favor of handling the issues of migration in a more coordinated and integrated manner internationally and regionally, with the participation and cooperation of the countries of origin, transit and destination.

This designation comes as a strong sign of confidence in the kingdom's ability to defend the interests of the continent within the organization and recognizes its active role in the current negotiations on migration issues at the international level, particularly within the IOM, according to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP).

This designation coincides with the recent international decision to grant Morocco the co-presidency, along with Germany, of the International Forum for Migration and Development in 2017 and 2018.

Morocco was among the leading countries to raise the attention of the international community towards the international migration phenomenon and to urge for the adoption of holistic strategies, which encompass the humanity, security and development dimensions.
